Privacy
& cookies
Short version: this site sets no cookies, runs no advertising, and hands nothing to anyone else. If you agree to it, it counts your visit — and that count cannot be traced back to you.
Who runs this site
Ian Hervé Buchanan ("Buck"), a painter based in Brighton, United Kingdom. He is the data controller for anything described on this page. To ask a question or make a request, message @ianhervebuchanan on Instagram.
What is collected, if you agree
When you choose "That's fine" on the banner, each page you open sends one short message to this site's own server. It contains:
- the page you opened — for example /;
- the website that sent you here, if any — the site's name only, such as instagram.com, never the full link;
- your browser's time zone, used only to guess a country — Europe/London becomes United Kingdom;
- your browser's language setting, such as en-gb;
- how wide your screen is, rounded into "phone", "tablet" or "desktop";
- whether this is the first page you have opened in this browsing session.
What is never collected
- Your IP address is not stored. It is not written to any file or database, and it is not used to work out where you are.
- No name, email address or any other detail about you.
- No advertising or tracking cookies — in fact, no cookies at all.
- No profile, and nothing that follows you to another website.
Why
So Buck knows whether anyone is looking, which paintings hold attention, and whether an exhibition post actually brought people to the site. The legal basis is your consent, and nothing is counted before you give it.
Cookies and storage
No cookies are used. Two small values are kept by your own browser:
- your answer to the banner, so you are not asked on every page;
- a marker that lasts until you close the tab, so one visit is not counted as several.
Both stay in your browser. Neither is sent anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes them.
If your browser says no
If you have "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control switched on, that decision is honoured automatically: nothing is counted and you are not asked.
How long it is kept
Visit records are deleted after 13 months. They are stored on this site's hosting in the European Union and are not shared with, or sold to, anyone.
Your choice, and your rights
You can change your mind at any time using the privacy choice link at the bottom of every page. Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or complain to the UK Information Commissioner at ico.org.uk. In practice the records here hold nothing that can be linked to you, so there is nothing to look up.
